We live in a world that is becoming more and more interconnected, where networked technologies are more and more ingrained in our daily activities, augmenting and improving the way we do business, keep track of our health, get services, and communicate with one another. With more communities in more nations embracing the greatest experiment in human history - the internet, every year, this fascinating trend is only gaining momentum. However, along with the countless advantages of this tool, which makes the depth of human knowledge accessible at the touch of a key, come new hazards and new responsibility for keeping ourselves secure.

The number of network-connected gadgets, such as smartphones, tablets, wristwatches, and even household appliances, has multiplied, and this has increased the channels and strategies that hostile actors might employ to try to harm technology users. When implementing new technologies that seamlessly enhance and integrate into our daily activities, it can be simple to miss these cyber risks, but the harm they offer is only expanding as the threat surface expands. According to projections, cyberattacks are likely to cost the world economy trillions of dollars over the next few years.

The strongest line of defence against cyberattacks has always been the development of end users' capacities and raising awareness on “how to be responsible consumers” of technology goods and services. Studies repeatedly show that most cyberattacks are the result of an end user making a basic human error, such as clicking on a malicious link or downloading dubious software. By exercising fundamental cybersecurity hygiene and remaining vigilant against online dangers, these attacks can be fended off. Such ability and awareness must, however, be deliberately developed.

Therefore, CyberPeace Foundation is proud to join with CISCO and Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) to explore the cybersecurity awareness among 5000 students in 10 states of India and building capacity of these students through a period of 10 months.

The iSafe project, launched by the CyberPeace Foundation and UNICEF, aims to address child protection issues in the online world. Children and young people are particularly vulnerable in the cyberspace, facing challenges such as the production and distribution of inappropriate explicit material (CSAM), bullying, online sexual harassment, and radicalization

It is crucial to educate and raise awareness among various professionals who are often indirectly involved in the well-being of children and youth, such as police officers responsible for investigations pertaining to children-and-youths’ safety. The project focuses on training personnel from frontline workers, law enforcement agencies, social welfare organisations, health departments, education departments, and the Department of Women and Child Line, who directly interact with vulnerable adolescents. The project aims to have a wide-scale impact and consistent implementation.

Drawing on the CyberPeace Foundation's expertise in collaboration, the project covers various topics such as: the roles and responsibilities of police personnel in responding to child victims, establishing a first response mechanism, accessing relevant resources and information for further sessions, sensitising children, and raising awareness of legal remedies. The initiative also consists of multiple online training workshops to discuss best practices for dealing with adolescent victims of cybercrimes. Training materials and audio-visual aids are also provided to enhance participants' understanding of the subject matter. The participants are provided with blockchain enabled e-certificates for completing the online sessions.

Towards a more inclusive internet

COUNTRY
Global
PROGRAM TYPE
Awareness

The objective of the Internet Governance initiative is to make the internet a more open, secure, easily accessible and inclusive place, while also addressing challenges concerning cybersecurity, privacy and digital rights. The organisation collaborates with various stakeholders, such as governments, civil society organisations, technical communities, and academia, in order to formulate policies and strategies that guarantee a safe and inclusive digital space.

Group sitting

To foster inclusion, the foundation conducts Universal Acceptance (UA) sessions and workshops that encourage the adoption of UA principles and technologies. Universal Acceptance ensures that domain names and email addresses from all languages & scripts are acknowledged and supported by internet-enabled devices and applications. In other words, UA promotes digital inclusion by removing barriers to participation.

The CyberPeace Center of Excellence also works on a DNSSEC testbed and secure DNS. These efforts ensure the security, stability, and resilience of the Domain Name System (DNS) that underpins the internet. This includes a DNSSEC competition to encourage businesses and organisations to adopt this technology.

In summary, the Internet Governance initiative is driven to create a more secure and inclusive internet by addressing crucial issues pertaining to online governance
